Re-Tally-8, the Numeracy Game
Re-Tally-8 Math Game Operations
Blair Faulkner, December 2009
DONNAN SCHOOL,
Edmonton, Alberta
The games have been great. The students love them and can’t wait to get a chance to play them. It is a perfect activity for those students who are finished their work and understand the concepts at hand. It gives them a great challenge and review on their number concepts.

L.Y. CAIRNS SCHOOL

My special needs junior high and high school students found the game challenging and fun to play.  As a teacher I was pleased to watch my students playing a game that incorporated logic, decision making and reinforced the use of basic math facts.  It is often difficult to support my students need for drill and practice of basic math facts but I found through allowing students to play the board game they were engaged in the drill and practice and enjoying it. Thank you for making math fun for my students.

This letter is to endorse the value of the new board game that you recently introduced to our school.  I used your game to my Grade 4 classroom this semester.  When we first tried out the game, and spent time playing it, I was excited about how my class liked it.  It was an excellent demonstration of a way to release the natural interest my students have for the subject matter of mathematics.  Playing Re-Tally-8 was a real treat for my students when they had completed their activity quickly, or at an indoor recess.

I introduced the game to several of my colleagues at a staff meeting.  I know children love learning by playing but I was impressed with the immediate acceptance of the game across entire classrooms.  It was obvious that children liked the mathematical play greatly.  It showcased what they knew and could do while creating a spontaneous desire in them to improve and extend their ability to form and express basic mathematical ideas.  The game has given a couple of my students a new motivation for and a desire to practice thinking with numbers.  Also, the engagement of the entire class as a whole provided a very positive and mutually supportive social interactions between students and with me.

Thanks again. Re-Tally-8 is not only to test the ability of the individual child to think in mathematical terms it is, most importantly an opportunity for the teacher and the classroom to learn and explore the world of mathematics together in an accepting and playful atmosphere.

RUNDLE SCHOOL

I would highly recommend Re-Tally-8 as a resource in any classroom.  Math can be simple, but it is really very complex.  The various strategies in your game enables students to challenge themselves in a game-like setting, rather than on worksheets.  The fun nature of a game board allows students to see math in a different light, that math can be fun, and working in groups to learn is possible.  Students are engaged, and highly motivated, to make their equations “work out”. I believe in incorporating games to learn.  My students were on task trying to decide on an equation, then re-doing their equation to get more points.

Rundle School chose to purchase a class set of Re-Tally-8 to help reinforce math with our division two students.  I am looking forward to implementing Re-Tally-8 into the classroom.

MEE-YAH-NOH SCHOOL
Thank you very much for the giving our grade four students the opportunity to play Re-Tally-8.  It was great to see them so excited about math!  Students of every ability level were able to play and feel successful.  The rules of the game were simple enough for everyone to learn quickly so they could get down to playing.  The game addresses the need for some students to practise basic facts using any or all of the operations.  It also provides the opportunity for more advanced students to challenge themselves by expanding equations to include more than one operation and larger numbers.

Re-Tally-8 is an excellent game for keeping everyone engaged at all times as players plan ahead, keep track of their own scores and help each other.  We look forward to owning the game ourselves so we can use it regularly to enhance our math program.
